If you are unsure whether a tree is covered by a Tree Preservation Order, you can contact your local authority to find out. They will be able to tell you if the tree is protected and what you need to do to apply for permission to carry out any works.
In addition to the application process, you may also need to provide additional information to the local authority. This could include photographs of the tree, a detailed description of the work you want to carry out, and a plan of the area around your tree. You may also need to provide evidence of why the work needs to be done, such as a report from a qualified arborist. Once the local authority has received all the necessary information, they will assess the application and decide whether to grant permission for the work to be carried out.
Tree preservation orders (TPOs) are put in place to protect trees from being damaged or destroyed. Trees located within conservation areas are also subject to protection. In this case, you must notify the local authority of your intended works. The council then has a set period of time to respond with feedback or to put an emergency TPO on the trees. If the council does not respond within the set time frame, you are allowed to proceed with the requested works.
