Trees should be assessed for risks on a regular basis depending on their location and the size and condition of the tree. For example, roadside trees would be assessed every 3 to 5 years. A tree that has been damaged or is showing signs of decline should be assessed on a more regular basis or following any extreme weather event.

The cost of a health and safety tree assessment will vary depending on the quantity of the trees to be assessed. Prices start at £150 for a single tree.

The level of detail in the report can vary depending on the management strategy of the tree owner. Reports can be based on all trees being recorded, in detail including the tree species, age, height, canopy spread, condition, recommendations and re-inspection frequency. Reports can be in less detail and can only record trees where work is recommended.

Most issues with a tree can be detected using a visual tree inspection, which is carried out from ground level. Obvious defects such as large open wounds, showing decay and fungi brackets are easily spotted. But more trees can also display more subtle signs of potential failure, or signs that they have compensated for any potential failure to prevent it happening.
